Guess the Battle from the Map

Game · 8 rounds · Free · Updated October 2026

Generals planned with maps, and historians still argue over them. This game turns the old maps that illustrate our articles into a puzzle: a corner of the battlefield first, then more, until the whole plan is on the table.

Frequently asked questions

How does Guess the Battle from the Map work?

Each round shows a small piece of a historical battle map with one clue. You can answer straight away for 4 points or reveal more of the map and another clue, down to 1 point when the full map is shown. A game has 8 rounds drawn at random from the pool.

Where do the maps come from?

They are period maps and battle plans that already illustrate our articles: military atlases, 19th century histories and official histories, all in the public domain or credited under their licence. Every answer links to the full story of that battle.

Is the game free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, and you can play as often as you like. Each game draws new maps, and your best score is remembered on your device.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. The game is built for phones first: tap an answer, or reveal the next clue with one tap. On a keyboard you can also press 1 to 4 to answer and R to reveal.
