You get the name of a famous battle and its date. Find the battlefield on a world map and drop your pin: the closer you land, the more points you score, up to 5,000 a round. After each guess the story of the battle slides out, with its numbers, its picture and a link to the full article. Every game draws five new battles from more than 180, from ancient Greece to the Pacific.
Where Was the Battle?
Frequently asked questions
How does scoring work?
Each round is worth up to 5,000 points. A pin within 10 km of the battlefield scores the full 5,000, and the score falls smoothly with distance: about 4,200 at 200 km, 3,300 at 500 km and 2,200 at 1,000 km. The hint shows the modern country and halves the round.
Where do the battlefield locations come from?
Each location was checked against at least two independent sources (English Wikipedia, Wikidata and Polish Wikipedia). Battles fought over a whole region, like the air Battle of Britain, are left out because they have no single point.
Which battles are in the game?
More than 180 battles and sieges from our Field Dispatch articles, from Marathon and Cannae to Gettysburg, Stalingrad and Midway. Five are drawn at random every game.
Can I play on a phone?
Yes. Drag to move the map, pinch with two fingers to zoom and tap to drop your pin. On a computer you can also use the mouse wheel or the keyboard.
