Between 1492 and the eve of the French Revolution, gunpowder reshaped war on every continent, from conquistadors in the Americas to musket volleys in Japan and India. Yet cavalry still won great days, none more famous than the charge of the winged hussars. This quiz takes you through eight of them.
You get eight short scenes, each describing a battle fought between 1492 and 1788 without naming it. Pick one of four answers, see a short fact after each round and get a rank at the end. It takes about three minutes.
Which battles are in the quiz?
The rounds span three continents: Tenochtitlan, Lepanto, Sekigahara, Kircholm, Vienna, Poltava, Plassey and Yorktown. Every answer links to a full article.
How did gunpowder change war in this period?
Firearms and artillery spread across the world, armies grew larger and fortifications were redesigned to resist cannon. Battles increasingly turned on firepower and drill, though cavalry such as the Polish hussars remained decisive in the right hands.
