The First World War began with armies on the march in 1914 and settled within months into a deadlocked trench line from the North Sea to Switzerland. Machine guns, massed artillery, gas and later tanks and aircraft made its battles the costliest the world had yet seen, on the Western Front and far beyond it. This quiz takes you through eight of them.

Frequently asked questions

How does the World War I battles quiz work?

You get eight short scenes, each describing a battle fought between 1914 and 1918 without naming it. Pick one of four answers, see a short fact after each round and get a rank at the end. It takes about three minutes.

Which battles are in the quiz?

The rounds cover Tannenberg, the Marne, First Ypres, Gallipoli, Verdun, the Somme, Passchendaele and Belleau Wood, on the Eastern and Western Fronts and at the Dardanelles. Every answer links to a full article.

Why did the Western Front become a stalemate?

Once the war of movement ended in late 1914, entrenched defenders with machine guns, barbed wire and artillery could usually stop attacks faster than reserves could exploit a breakthrough. Only in 1918, with new tactics, tanks and fresh American troops, did movement return.
