Medieval warfare is remembered for armoured knights, but battles were just as often won by disciplined infantry, archers, horse archers and, by the end, gunpowder. Its decisive days stretched from the Frankish fields and Central Asia to the Holy Land and the walls of Constantinople. This quiz takes you through eight of them.
You get eight short scenes, each describing a battle fought between 476 and 1491 without naming it. Pick one of four answers, see a short fact after each round and get a rank at the end. It takes about three minutes.
Which battles are in the quiz?
The rounds range across Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia: Tours, Talas, Hastings, Hattin, Ain Jalut, Grunwald, Agincourt and the fall of Constantinople. Every answer links to a full article.
Were knights always decisive in medieval battles?
No. Heavy cavalry was powerful, but many famous battles were decided by infantry that held its ground, by archers as at Agincourt, by thirst and terrain as at Hattin, or by siege artillery as at Constantinople in 1453.
